Piano Lesson Information

PLEASE NOTE - You must have regular access to a piano or keyboard in order to take lessons. If you need help finding an instrument or a practice location, just let me know.

BEGINNERS

THE FIRST LESSON

Your first lesson will start with the basics of the piano: how to sit, how to hold your hands, and learning the keyboard. We begin with learning the music alphabet and how to find notes on the keyboard. Depending on the student, some basic music theory concepts, especially rhythm, are introduced. Lessons are taught using well-established method books and you will be assigned things to practice until the next lesson.

AFTER THE FIRST LESSON

The second lessons and all subsequent lessons will gradually introduce you to the musical staff, basic rhythms and time signatures. As you progress, you will learn key signatures, music terminology, the pedals, artistic expression and more. While your hands will initially use only a small part of the keyboard, that will change as you progress and become more proficient. Repertoire choices will greatly expand as your technique and musical knowledge develops.

MORE ADVANCED STUDENTS

THE FIRST LESSON

Please plan to play something for me. It does not have not be memorized. It can also be in any style, not necessarily classical. I'm most interested in hearing you play something with which you feel confident and enjoy. If you haven't played in awhile, choose something you think you will play reasonably well. I'll use this opportunity to diagnose where you are as a pianist and develop a plan for moving forward. We'll spend some time talking about your past training and your goals.

We'll select repertoire based on your interests, abilities and goals. Future lessons will include not only working on your repertoire, but also on piano technique like scales, arpeggios and technical exercises.

THE FINE PRINT

I will be 100% committed to your improvement as a pianist and musician and ask the same from you. Practice between lessons is important. If practice space is an issue for you, I can help you find options.

Except for the first month, lessons must be paid for in full at the start of each month. This ensures that I am able to keep your preferred lesson spot available each week.

If you must miss a lesson, please let me know as soon as possible. Cancellations made a minimum of 24 hours in advance will be rescheduled based on our mutual availability. Lessons canceled in less time than that will not be rescheduled except in unusual circumstances.

If I need to miss a lesson, you will receive a credit toward the next month.
